Founded in 1945, the Shepherdstown Men's Club is an organization of men and women dedicated to community service. Membership is open to all people eighteen years and older, who wish to contribute their time and energy to maintain and operate SMC-supported civic programs and facilities, as well as to enjoy the Club's dinner meetings and other social activities.
Okay, back to work. Whatever happened to summer? Some days I went out and looked at my garden and I think we somehow got transported to Death Valley. My bees are all still hanging outside of the hive on the landing board trying to stay cool.
Like the students at Shepherd, it's back to business and the Men's Club is no exception. The next Club social event is right around the corner. We will hold the annual Labor Day Picnic at Morgan's Grove Park on September 6th. The activities start at 2 p.m. so for goodness sake, don't eat lunch and we recommend a light breakfast. Danny Rohrer has again donated some of his wonderful meat for the hamburgers and we will have hot dogs, plus of course, corn-on-the-cob, soft drinks, ice cream bars, popsicles and probably some watermelon too. All served up by volunteers for a very nominal price. You are welcome to bring a side dish to share with other families if you like. And don't forget your own favorite lawn chair or blanket if you really want to settle in and have a luxurious afternoon. Peter Wilson will deliver a few remarks at 3:30 p.m. (what's Labor Day without a speech) and then the much-loved Rohrersville Band will begin their concert at 4 p.m.
We hope everybody will develop a more possessive attitude about the Park. It is a real treasure. And we welcome suggestions or ideas on how to make more effective use of it. The Ad Hoc Committee working to develop a long term vision for Morgan's Grove continues to meet monthly exploring the full range of options. We plan to provide a status report for the general membership meeting in November.
Turnout for the first "community day" on August 28 to work on sprucing up the War Memorial Building was sparse, but we still managed to accomplish quite a bit. We painted the lower portion of the foyer except for the trim and managed to get two of the front windows scraped and sanded. We will hold another work session mid-month.
We are continuing to collect books for the annual used book sale which will be held on October 22-24. Art Wineburg, this year's chairman is working hard to get the word out. Please call him at (304) 876-2586 if you are interested in helping or have books to donate. His email address is awineburg@akingump.com.
I hope you got some vacation time in and are excited about the months ahead.
