Creating this new site has been a true learning experience for me as I have not done anything like this before. I won't say it was easy, but I really wanted to produce a site that facilitates communication to and with our members. In the process we now have new rental policies published, a Club Calendar in addition to the Rental Calendar for the WMB, web pages that can be easily updated, notes from the President to keep us informed, places for pictures to record our events, and much more. I hope you will find it helpful and easy to navigate.
Also to make life easier, I introduced PayPal as an option for paying dues, donating to Morgan's Grove Park, paying WMB rentals, and more to come.
The Shepherdstown Men's Club has been around for a long time and has many different projects going. The development of the site was complicated, for example, by the need to maintain the Rental Calendar with its years of history of previous events. This calendar has become rather an authority to consult when memory fails for many organizations, including our own. And while the SMC Foundation owns and maintains the War Memorial Building and Morgan's Grove Park, we also have an active SMC social schedule with dinner meetings as well as special projects like the Back Alley Tour, etc.
To become part of this project, we are looking for someone to work with the storehouse of digital pictures that are available to put together a digital scrapbooking section. We could also use a historian of sorts to locate old newsletters and scan them for the site. And we could really use a web person to manage this site. I am signed on through December 2010 but will hand over the reins any time!
This site was developed by Jennifer King using Joomla, an Open Source Content Management System, . Carol Dunleavy designed the site we are replacing -- she did an awesome job on her own creating a site that served us well but was, frankly, really hard for the rest of us to update. Joel Garner established the first website in 2003 breaking new ground for the SMC. I already have ideas about how I would redesign this site but will leave that to the next person.
Please let me know what you think. I will do what I can to implement new ideas. I have already learned far more HTML than I ever thought I would need in retirement. Never hesitate to point out a misspelling or factual error. I hope you enjoy this site well enough to work with me to make it better. Communication is everything!
